What Can You Do To HelpConserve Medicinal Plants?
Be A Responsible Consumer
Read labelscarefully before you purchase a product. A label tells you many things, including whether the active ingredient is a standardized extract and whetheradditives have been included. A label also may tell you whether the productyou're buying comes from wildcrafted plants or from cultivated sources. Someplants such as yellow dock, sassafras and saw palmetto occur in sufficientabundance that careful, sustainable wildcrafting is not a concern. Others, likecertain echinacea species, ginseng, and goldenseal, face varying pressure fromovercollecting for commercial purposes. Decide when you feel comfortablesupporting products from wildcrafted rather than commercially grown sources.
Learn where the medicinal products you consume come from. Visit industry webpages to learn more about their policies on conservation. Find out if and howthey compensate indigenous peoples for their plant knowledge. Such compensationand respect for native knowledge is particularly important when new drugs aredeveloped from information about plants that historically have been safeguardedby native peoples.
Support products whose manufacturers demonstratecommitment to the sustainability of wild medicinal plants.
EducateYourself
Get to know the medicinal plants you use most frequently. Read aboutthem in your local library. If these plants are native to your area, walkthrough the woods or other open spaces to find and identify them. Note how theygrow in the wild. Note the plants they grow with. Sketch or photograph them sothat you have a record of their habitat.
Research a source of cultivatedplants, and create a medicinal plant garden in your backyard, at a local school,or at a public location.
Think globally, and act locally, first by joining anational plant conservation group such as United Plant Savers or The NatureConservancy, and then by putting your ideals to work in your local garden club, native plant society, or master gardener program.
Take Action
Work toconserve habitat for native medicinal plants. One way to do this is byintroducing community leaders and elected officials to the benefits of medicinalplants, as well as the importance of conserving them. The destruction of nativehabitat and the species it protects is the single most significant contributorto the loss of biodiversity worldwide.
Help monitor wild populations ofmedicinal plants to determine their status. Contact the Natural Heritage Programin your state to identify species that need monitoring. Natural HeritagePrograms usually operate through local governments or universities. For moreinformation visit www.natureserve.org. Your local university biology programalso may be able to provide helpful advice.
Patronize local nurseries andgrowers. If a behind-the-scenes tour becomes available, take advantage of it.Ask about the source of their nursery stock. Encourage their support of localconservation efforts.
Share what you know about plants with others, especially young children. Scout troops, 4H clubs, school groups, and FutureFarmers of America are organizations where you can have an impact on the future.Write articles for local magazines and newspapers about local medicinal plants, their cultural history and what they contribute to the community.
Keepasking questions and seeking answers.

© 2002 by Tim Johnson
This database was collected over anten-year period. At first, it included the plant properties mentioned in variousbooks, which yielded information about some 800 species. Later, information wasgathered that was already digitized and stored in several online databases. Thismade it possible to expand the scope to over 29,000 species, and in doing so, toyield a clearer picture about each individual species. In late 1998, the printversion was published - the CRC Ethnobotany Desk Reference. This may be thelargest-scope materia medicae ever. And now, as of March 14, 2002, the globalbotanical exchange. MEDIZINALPFLANZEN (Classic Botanical Illustrations): Hermann A. Köhler's magnum opus,Medizinal Pflanzen, was published in 1887, eight years after his death. The setof three volumes was a noteworthy achievement and included plants of medicinalinterest from several European nations. It was described by Sitwell and Blunt as"From the botanical standpoint the finest and most useful series ofillustrations of medicinal plants." Köhler's Medizinal Pflanzen was edited byGustav Pabst, who like Köhler was a German botanist. The remarkable feature ofthe publication is its nearly 300 finely detailed illustrations, expertly drawnby the artists L. Müeller and C.F. Schmidt, which were skillfully rendered byK.Gunther in chromolithography.

Thisis a rare 4th volume of Franz Köhler's Medizinal-Pflanzen

PROMETRA-We have been working since 1971 to restore andpreserve African traditional medical practices ? with individual healers, at ourExperimental Center for Traditional Medicine (CEMETRA) in Fatick, Senegal, andwith our partners in other countries in Africa and around the world. We beganour project in the Fatick region of Senegal because the people there had managedto preserve their traditions of traditional medicine despite centuries ofexternal exploitation, poverty and drought. Our first objective was to figureout how to separate true healers from charlatans. We soon realized that modernsorting methods and statistical studies would not work in this situation. So weused African methods. We chose investigators native to the region. Their rolewas to prepare villages throughout the region to receive a scientific committeefrom Prometra who would ask them to identify local healers: (http://www.prometra.org/Prometra.htm)

Conditionsfor which studies of Ayurvedic therapies were reviewed informatively by AHRQ(formerly AHCPR):
Diabetes mellitus.
Hypercholesterolemia.
Cardiovascular diseases.
The Ayurvedic therapy that was the most commonsubject of published studies was herbal therapy. Significant heterogeneityexists in the studies identified. More than 45 single herbs or combinationherbal therapies were tested. The most common single herbs studied were Gymnemasylvestre, Coccinia indica, fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), and Eugeniajambolana. A number of herbal formulas were tested, but Ayush-82 and D-400 werethe two most often studied.
There is evidence to suggest that the singleherbs Coccinia indica, holy basil, fenugreek, and Gymnema sylvestre and theherbal formulas Ayush-82 and D-400 have a glucose-lowering effect and deservefurther study. Evidence of effectiveness of several other herbs is lessextensive (C. tamala, Eugenia jambolana, and Momordica charantia): (http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/epcsums/ayurvsum.htm)
