Title:Pain, Opioids and Addiction: An Urgent Problem for Doctors and Patients (Day1)
Date: Tuesday, March 06, 2007, 8:30:00 AM
Category:Conferences
Description: This joint NIH/NIDA/AMA meeting will bring togetherthe research and clinical practice communities through its co-sponsorship withthe AMA, and supported by the NIH Pain Consortium to draw attention to thegrowing problem of prescription opioid misuse by patients with chronicnon-malignant pain conditions. The most powerful treatments available for mostforms of pain are opioids. However, opioid treatment can produce negative healthconsequences, such as intoxication and physical dependence, and may result inopioid abuse and addiction. The prevalence of, and the process of how toprevent, reduce and treat these negative health consequences are not wellunderstood. The goal is to inform practitioners and scientists on emergingresearch on pain and addiction and what we are learning about how to mosteffectively and compassionately treat these conditions, while minimizing therisk of abuse and addiction.

DRUG INJECTION AMONG STREET YOUTHS IN MONTREAL: PREDICTORS OFINITIATION by Élise Roy, Nancy Haley, Pascale Leclerc, Lyne Cédras, Lucie Blaisand Jean-François Boivin (E-mail: eroy@santepub-mtl.qc.ca)
Abstract: In NorthAmerica, street youths are generally considered at very high risk of injectiondrug use. To estimate the incidence rate of injection drug use in thispopulation and to identify predictors of injection drug use, we conducted thepresent analysis. Among participants to a cohort study initiated in January1995, we selected subjects who had never injected at study entry and hadcompleted at least one follow-up questionnaire. Predictors of initiation wereidentified using Cox proportional hazard regression models. Among the 415 neverinjectors (mean age at entry 19.5 years), 74 had initiated injection by January2000 (incidence rate 8.2 per 100 person-years). Independent predictors ofinitiation were recent episode of homelessness; age younger than 18 years; beingtattooed; recently using hallucinogens, heroin, and cocaine/crack/freebase;having a friend who injects drugs; and having ever experienced extrafamilialsexual abuse. This study showed that injection drug use is frequent among streetyouths, but prevention appears possible. FULL TEXT AT: (http://jurban.oupjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/80/1/92?etoc)
